What Is The Fuss About N255 Million? - Musa Dickson Achimugu @Diqsen

Over the past few weeks, the nation's media have been awashed with stories which have come to be known as Oduahgate. Clearly, as with most things Nigerian, sides have been formed. While some people swear that Ms Stella Oduah is the best thing that has ever happened to Nigeria's aviation industry and that she is being victimized as a result of her bold steps to correct the ills she inherited in that sector, others are determined to see her sacked for blatant corruption.

Before now, the stellar performance of Ms Stella has gained mythical proportions. Like a colossus, she seemed to have transformed the industry on a massive scale, giving teeth to the new administration of President Jonathan which was then just a few months into office. If you believe the publicity, all the airports in Nigeria now wear a new and modern look, and this is glaring for all to see – never mind that  planes have been falling off our skies. Of course, 'bad belle' people blame the recent surge in plane crashes to her ineffectiveness, when they should have seen it for what it is: an act of God.

China, having seen the good works begged Nigeria to obtain a $500 million from them as part of their contribution to this transformation. Nigeria also secured a historical BASA agreement with Israel due to her sterling performance. If you add her stunning achievement with her stunning looks, it should be enough to draw an Alexandra Burkeesque 'Hallelujah' from your lips.

Yet, those who said her airport transformation project is a ruse for monumental corruption point to the allegations of graft, over inflated contracts, allocation of funds for multiple sham contracts, awards of contract without regard to due process, nepotism, forcing operators to buy exorbitant aviation fuel from her company and failing to ensure the safety of air travellers.

Not surprising, some people, even groups have come out in stout defence of the aviation minister. True, the argument cuts across a wide spectrum, from the reasonable or persuasive, to the utterly ridiculous. While it can be argued that her revocation of the irregular concession agreements which were serving the interest of the concessionaires alone and ruining our collective patrimony have made her some powerful enemies who would think nothing of besmearing her person, it is ridiculous to bring her ethnic group into the equation as she has done. It is even more bizarre for a group to suggest that purchasing the said cars for N255 million was done to provide adequate security for our airports.

The noise and the nonsense from both sides have been too much. There are many reasons why Nigerians are angry over the reckless spending of N255 million on two cars. The propriety of acquiring such expensive gadgets has been questioned by many Nigerians, some of whom note that the official vehicle of the United States President is not as expensive as that, and that the cars could be bought for a quarter of that amount.

The morality of acquiring just two cars for N255 million in a country with a subjective poverty index of about 94%, and where students have been at home for about four months because of government's inability to honour an agreement, has been questioned. The legality of a parastatal under the ministry buying such expensive cars for the use of the minister has also been questioned.

But I ask, what is the fuss about N255 million? Why is there so much emphasis on the cost of the cars? N255 million is not even enough to feed our president for just 15 days; N255 million is not enough for our Vice President to read his newspapers; N255 million cannot maintain our presidential jets for 10 days; N255 million is not enough for our National Assembly for one day. So what is the fuss about N255 million? I think we are not asking the right questions and we are putting wrong emphasis on the cost of the cars.

I'd rather ask the following questions;

  1. How much was appropriated for the purchase of operational vehicles by NCAA for 2013?
  2. How many vehicles was the said sum appropriated for?
  3. How much has been committed to the purchase of operational vehicles in 2013, whether by actual cash or lease financing?
  4. Is there a differential between the appropriated sum and the committed sum?
  5. If there is a differential, who approved it?
  6. Was the person that gave such approval authorised by law and the Nigerian constitution to grant such?
  7. Is there a ceiling on the maximum contract sum that can be awarded by a parastatal of government, above which permission must be sought and obtained from the Federal Executive Council before which such contract can be awarded?
  8. Did NCAA at any time award a contract above this ceiling in the purchase of their operational vehicles?
  9. Did they seek the permission of FEC and obtained it before they awarded those contracts?
  10. Can the Minister act on behalf of FEC to approve spending above the ceiling?
  11. Is it mandatory that the BPP be involved in the award of all government contracts?
  12. Was the BPP involved in the purchase of the operational vehicles by NCAA?
  13. Is there government approved due process in the award of contracts?
  14. Did the NCAA follow due process in awarding contracts for the purchase of its operational vehicles?
  15. Is it compulsory to seek and obtain permission of Security agencies before bringing in security vehicles to Nigeria?
  16. Was such permission sought and obtained before the NCAA purchased the security vehicles?
  17. Where are the operational vehicles purchased by NCAA?
  18. Would a crime be committed if an official of government contravenes a law while acting in the 'overriding interest of the masses'?
These for me are questions we should be asking, instead of fussing over N255 million.

It Takes More Than A Pretty Face To Be A Broadcaster – Becky Madojemu

Becky Madojemu is a seasoned broadcaster with Nigerian Television Authority(NTA). She has been a broadcaster for over a decade and still counting. She anchors the network news-line on Sunday from 9-10:30pm.  Her story is that broadcasting discovered her rather than the other way round. In  this interview, she talks about how she landed the job as a broadcaster without actually preparing for it; her style and other things that make her tick.

How would you describe yourself?
I am a nice person, but I am nobody's fool. I am the girl next door.  I can be complicated just as I can be down-to-earth. I can be an introvert or an extrovert. It depends  on my mood, time and place.

What do you do for a living?
I am a broadcaster. I have been a broadcaster since 1997, after my Youth Service.  I started with ITV, Benin, where I worked for five years  before I relocated to Lagos in 2002. I am an Assistant Manager, News, with Lagos Network centre of Nigerian Television Authority.

How did you get into broadcasting?
It can be said that broadcasting discovered me because I read Economics in the university. And most times, it's out of place to come across someone who read Economics and ends up pursuing a career in broadcasting.  I walked into a television house in Benin, Edo State after my Youth Service in 1997, to attend an interview for a position of a marketing officer but I found myself being shortlisted for a broadcasting job. While I was waiting to be summoned for the marketing interview it turned out that it was the broadcasting interview I was called for. I was just instructed to read a script and that was all. That was how I ended up with a broadcasting job.

But how did that happen?
I do not know what happened. Perhaps, I must have impressed them. Of course, I used to mimic newscasters while I was growing up as a child. Maybe, I subconsciously worked on myself without even knowing it.  I also used to read things to my mother and siblings while we were growing up.

So, you got the job on a platter of gold?
I got the job two months after I graduated from the university and after my Youth Service. I was very young and I was in dire need of a job. Perhaps, that was what made me to hold on to the job instead of sticking to what I have always wanted to do, which was marketing or  working in the banking sector.  I  always felt like a fraudster among  my colleagues because majority of them read either English language or Mass Communications. I was the only person that read Economics. But today, I cannot see myself doing something else other than what I am doing presently. I feel fulfilled.

What was it like learning the art of broadcasting and blending it with what you already knew?
You know in our kind of work; you learn on the job. We were all so young in the newsroom.  So, we learnt on the job. They don't teach you everything in school. Ironically, I observed that those of us who didn't major in English language or Mass Communications were far better than those who studied these courses. There's nothing  wrong in studying these courses. though they were better than us literally. In practical terms, we were doing better. We learnt the ropes while on the job and that helped us.

Were  there moments you regretted why you didn't study Mass Communications or any other related course?
I never had moments like that. I learnt on the job. I guess, it was like that because I had good mentors on the job. I learnt very fast. I had a boss, Abidjan Ejayekre of blessed memory and  other tested hands. I am sure that helped me.

At what point,  did you resolve not to dump broadcasting anymore?
I think that point was when I was doing CNN Live reports. I was seeing myself in CNN promotions and all that. I knew right then that l didn't belong anywhere else.

What does it take to become a broadcaster?
First and foremost; you have to be very intelligent. You cannot afford to make any mistake because if you do then it's already on air. It is easier to make a mistake when you are behind the pen. But if you are broadcasting,  you may be done with your job for the slightest of mistakes. Secondly, you must have the flair, you must have that charisma to captivate your audience. There are many Television stations out there and the viewers have three seconds with a remote control;  so if  there's nothing catchy about you they tune to the next channel within the twinkling of an eye.  It takes more than a pretty face to be a broadcaster. You must know what you are doing; you must be intelligent, you must know a little about everything because the viewers are informed.

The television is all about glamour and you are not missing in action. Don't you think that was part of the reason you were considered for the job in the first place?
I don't think so; as there were many beautiful ladies that came for the interview on that day. I do not think looking glamorous was part of the reason I got the job. I think what played a major role for me on that day was fate and destiny, not glamour at all. Perhaps, my interviewers liked the way I sounded.

Do you think your looks played a role too?
I don't know, perhaps in some other stations, but not in Nigerian Television Authority. They have seasoned professionals behind the cameras. So, if you sound somehow; no matter how pretty you are, they send you out permanently.

Have you ever goofed on air?
Wow! Several times. The worst one was when I was in Benin. Usually, when I am about going on air, I asked the camera man to connect the camera to the monitor; so I can see myself and fix myself up.  So this fateful day; I saw myself on the monitor as usual, about five minutes before going on air,  and I whispered 'thank you' to him, but he was staring at me.  So, I started adjusting myself; my hair, my face and did all that. I did my make-up, coughed, but all the while, I didn't know that people were watching me at home, right on air! Later, my mum told me she saw me on air adjusting my hair. In fact, the whole town went mad and my mum screamed. It was horrible, I do not wish it on my enemy. There are awkward moments as a broadcaster, but if you are smart and good, you would smile your way through.

What has been your most fascinating moment as a  broadcaster?
There are many, but I do not want to discuss any here.

You are a very beautiful woman. Are you married?
I am not married. Is that shocking?

Why aren't you married?
I am waiting for him to find me.

If there is a man wanting to find you. What would you be looking for?
I want a credible man, an ambitious person. Not one who builds castles in the air.  I need godliness; we have enough godliness around us.

Can you share any romantic experience with us?
Someone came to my house on St. Valentine's day and brought a present for me. I thought that was romantic.  It was romantic because I wasn't expecting anything from anyone that Valentine's day and it came so early.

Are you a stylish person?
I dress for comfort; not style. Something could be beautiful, but if I am not going to be comfortable in it; then I won't wear it. As for perfumes, I love designers' perfumes. I know my clothes when I see them; my friends also know my clothes when they see it.

You are mentoring younger people now, what else do you wish to do after this?
I  have a lot of younger colleagues looking up to me like I looked up to my mentors. But I haven't gotten to that stage of doing something different from what I am doing today. At the moment, I am climbing the Civil Service's ladder, but if I am ever chanced I wish to go into politics. I may not go into the campaign and stuff like that, but if I am voted for, I will gladly grab the opportunity.

I’ve Disappointed Critics Of My Musical Career – Ego

Singer Ego Ihenacho Ogbaro believes music has made her a deeper person. The petite lady was the only female vocalist with Lagbaja's band until she left to pursue a solo career in 2007. She has backed-up for the masked musician on several tracks including 'Konko Below' and 'Nothing For You' but her soulful wailing in 'Never far Away', a track in Lagbaja's 'Africano' album, remains indelible in the minds of fans. Ego spoke with Saturday Vanguard  recently about her life after split from Lagbaja
Enjoy .
Who was Ego as a child?
I was a very stubborn child and I am still very stubborn(chuckles) because I always wanted my way. It was my way or no way. Although I was a lively child, I didn't let things get to me or weigh me down.  I easily get angry and  I think I am just myself.

How has it been since you left Lagbaja?
I always knew that I wanted to sing and it was just a matter of time before the dream manifested.
What I wanted to do was totally different from what I was doing with Lagbaja. It was the same music thing but in a different way. Yes, people would have their doubts and not even know what direction I was going.
It was a step that I had to take, something I had to prove and had to show the world that I knew what I wanted and I was moving in the right direction. So, it's natural for people to feel that way and have doubts. So far, it's been good.

How long did you work with  him?
I  worked with him as a solo artiste for 12years and I learnt a lot from him, like hard work and not compromising.

At what point did you realise that you were going make a career out of music?
I have always been surrounded by music from my childhood. I've always loved music but I took it for granted. When I left secondary school, it was more of  a hobby for me. I joined Colours Band which later became Lagbaja's band. It wasn't until then that I began to take it serious. I started going for shows and I was making money from it, so I was like okay, this is something I enjoy doing and I am making money from it; it's not a bad thing. It was at that point that I began to take it serious and I said to myself, 'let me give this a shot'.

Do you have your own band as well?
Yes , it is called Indigo.

What inspired you to form a band?
I am a live performer, so there was the need to get my own band. This is one of the problems that most artistes face today. They find it very difficult to perform with a live band. It is very important to play with a live band. I first look for those that can form the band with me.
Though, I am not taking anything away from those that use live band; but I just feel that when you use a live band, it's fun. You can improvise and express yourself. You are not much of a musician if you cannot sing with a live band. I always knew that I was going to use a band. As much as I like singing my own songs, I like singing other people's song and this was how I even started. Let me state that this is totally different from miming. We do this at events such as weddings, corporate events and other events. It is the same band, that is, Indigo that also back me up whenever I want to sing as Ego.

What are your likes and dislikes?
Basically, I like real people, down to earth people, intelligent people and the ones that can push me to get a better result. I cannot stand people who are fake but people with fantastic sense of humour.

Since you parted ways with Lagbaja, have you released any album on your own?
Yes , I released an album this year titled First Step but before that,  I have released three singles and two videos and I am very encouraged from the feed-back.

Download, play and listen to Tosin Kuti murder Mos Def ‘s Travelling Man instrumental on December and The Fugees’ Ready Or Not Instrumental.
Who is Tosin Kuti? That is the question. An British-Nigerian based in London town, he grew up listening to superior word smiths of years gone by in awe of their manipulation of the lexicon and inspired by the impact of their words. During his teenage years, he gradually honed his relatively new found skills by sparring with other rhymers, gaining respect for few but recognising that there were other young men with the sacred power. He has gained experience in stage performance through rapping and freestyling any time he was given the chance. Currently he is working on his debut EP ‘Young Ol’ Head’ with various producers while supplementing them with his own sounds. Songs like ‘Ready or Not’ present Tosin in his purest form as he expresses his thoughts. He has joined forces with K!t and Bara Blaque to form the formidable ‘ The Koup’. Now he has plans of taking his talents to the heavens. Will he? In the words of the man himself says ‘Watch me’.

Kerry Washington: I Watch What I Eat, Don't Drink Alcohol

On ABC's hit series Scandal, Olivia Pope is perpetually nursing a glass of red wine after a grueling day of tackling clients' problems. But in reality, Kerry Washington says she doesn't drink.

She tells the NY Post, “Who needs those empty calories? I watch what I eat." Washington, who also covers the November Issue of Essence, tells the publication she rarely consumes alcohol -- "I drink maybe twice a year" -- unless she's reunited with her best friends from high school or with girlfriends from her show.

The 36-year-old actress, who stays in shape by doing pilates, shared with Us Weekly in April as part of her "25 Things" that she also abstains from coffee. Whatever the fresh-faced beauty does in terms of upkeep is working: Washington was named Neutrogena's new creative consultant just last week.

Providing some insight on her otherwise private life (the actress secretly wed NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha in July), Washington says, "I actually live quietly. Work hard. Get bored easily."
She will host Saturday Night Live on Nov. 2.

NEW MUSIC: Olusesi - In The Morning

In The Morning is a brand new inspirational rap single by up-coming artiste Olusesi.
Thought, analysis, introspection, and seclusivness are all characteristics of the expression number 7. The hallmark of the number 7 is a good mind, and especially good at searching out and finding the truth. Sesi is so very capable of analyzing, judging and discriminating that very little ever escape his observation and deep understanding. He is the type of person that can really get involved in a search for wisdom or hidden truths, often becoming an authority on whatever it is he is focusing on. This can easily be of a technical or scientific nature, or it may be religious, it matters very little, Sesi pursues knowledge with the same sort of vigor. He can make a very fine teacher, or because of a natural inclination toward the spiritual, he may become deeply emerged in religious affairs or even psychic explorations. He tends to operate on a rather different wavelength, and many of his friends may not really know him very well. The positive aspects of the 7 expression are that Sesi can be a true perfectionist in a very positive sense of the word. Sesi is very logical, and usually employs a quite rational approach to most things he does. He can be so rational at times that he almost seem to lack emotion, and when faced with an emotional situation, Sesi may have a bit of a problem coping with it. He has excellent capabilities to study and learn really deep and difficult subjects, and to search for hidden fundamentals. At full maturity he is likely to be a very peaceful and a poised individual. Very adaptable and versatile. Sesi has a natural resourcefulness and enthusiasm that may mark him as a progressive with a good mind and active imagination. He seems to have a natural inclination to be a pace-setter. Sesi is attracted to the unusual and the fast paced.
The above best describes the young Nigerian music artiste who goes by the name “Olusesi” or simply “Sesi” (Real names Friday Okoh Joseph). He hails from Ukale-Igwu , Orokamu in Ogbadigbo LGA of Benue state, Nigeria. He was born and brought up in the city of Lagos. Sesi as he is fondly called, has always been passionate about music from a very tender age. No wonder he chose to go that direction in life (career-wise). Although he is quite experimental and likes trying out new things he is most comfortable doing Afro Pop/RnB and naija hip-hop.

"I think that's a big reason for why she always looks lean and her skin always looks great," says Braganza.

Amanda Seyfried
To tone up for the title role in her 2011 thriller Red Riding Hood, Amanda Seyfried also turned to celebrity trainer Ramona Braganza. "She was so committed," says Braganza who challenged Amanda with the same 3-2-1 method she uses with Alba. Small-framed and naturally slender, Amanda's workouts were focused on adding muscle definition and building strength all over.

Tina Fey
When it came time to sport a sleeveless dress for nearly every scene in Date Night, Tina Fey turned to yoga expert Kristin McGee to tone her upper body. "Doing pushups is not fun, but yoga has a natural, fluid pushup that's really beautiful and effective if you're doing it right," says McGee, instructor in the Body by Bethenny DVD with Bethenny Frankel. Plank pose and the low pushup-position chatarunga supplied Tina with a portable upper body workout she could do anywhere at any time, even after hitting the makeup trailer.

Zac Efron
No stranger to shirtless scenes, Zac Efron worked with celebrity trainer Ramona Braganza while preparing for the title role in the film Charlie St. Cloud. Surprisingly, the camera's focus wasn't going to be on Zac's already impressive abs -- but on his back. To help add mass to his naturally athletic build, Braganza prescribed grueling workouts that included pullups and pulldowns using heavy weights, fewer reps, more sets -- and lots of variety. "Workouts need to change constantly. Change the weights, change the sets, change the tempo. You want to shock your body," says Braganza.

Anna Paquin
You don't need one-on-one time with a personal trainer to sculpt your body like a celebrity. Paquin and countless other stars like Kyra Sedgwick and David Duchovny head to Core Fusion classes to see quick body transformations. The hour-long classes take cues from Pilates, yoga, and the Lotte Berk Method, and focus on body alignment and building dancer-like strength and technique. "When you're completing strengthening moves in the correct body alignment, you don't have to do as many repetitions and yet you're going to get results faster and more safely," says Elisabeth Halfpapp, who created the best-selling Exhale: Core Fusion DVDs with her husband, Fred DeVito.

Natalie Portman
To help create the ballet-specific body type needed to portray a prima ballerina in the film Black Swan, Natalie Portman worked with Mary Helen Bowers, a 10-year veteran of the New York City Ballet and creator of Ballet Beautiful, a ballet-inspired training method. When they first started -- about a year before Black Swan went into rehearsals -- Bowers and Natalie trained 5 to 6 days a week, completing a 2-hour ballet technique class and as well as Ballet Beautiful exercises every day. As the months passed they worked up to a grueling 5 to 8 hours per day, 6-days a week schedule. In addition to dancing, Bowers added cross training like swimming and running on the treadmill or elliptical to help bolster Natalie's stamina and endurance.

Halle Berry
With her amazing physique -- even post-baby bump -- it's no surprise that Halle Berry's trainer Ramona Braganza calls her hard-core. "She likes to be pushed to the limit for 30 minutes rather than do the full hour," says Braganza. "She prefers a shorter but much more intense workout." Braganza also mixes in kickboxing and hiking to keep their workouts interesting. But Halle's healthy look isn't just the result of tough gym-time. "She really appreciates that you have to have time for rest as well," says Braganza. "Halle loves to garden, play with her daughter, and spend time with friends -- that all contributes to total wellness."

Miranda Kerr
How do models get those legs? Genetics and leg lifts, says Justin Gelband, trainer to Miranda Kerr and several top models like Lily Aldridge and Erin Heatherton. To help his model clients strut their stuff on the runway Justin Gelband has them use equipment like resistance bands and gliding discs while completing moves that challenge their balance and posture. "There are so many things you can do to work every single angle of the butt, the hips, and the thighs," says Gelband. "I focus on working the smaller more intrinsic muscles."

Matthew Morrison
Celebrity trainer Bernardo Coppola is the one assigning homework when it comes to the glee club's favorite teacher, Matthew Morrison. A combination of body-weight and free-weight exercises mixed with machines and cardio keeps this TV teacher and former Broadway star busy after school. Many of Matthew's sweat sessions don't take place in the gym. On the Glee lot, Matthew trains with resistance bands or does body-weight workouts with Coppola. "People don't have to go to the gym in order to get fit and be healthy," says Coppola, co-owner of the Los Angeles eatery Fit Food. "You can easily grab something heavy and start working your biceps or do body-weight lunges."
