Prolific Director Amaka Igwe Passes On @51

Foremost producer, writer, director and a leading player in the Nigerian motion picture industry, Amaka Igwe has passed on. She died on April 28th in Enugu after an asthma attack. Mrs Igwe had gone to Enugu in company of her husband for pre-production preparations for a new Igbo soap when the sad incident occurred.

She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital after initial intervention had failed but sadly died before getting there.

Mrs Igwe is survived by her husband of 21 years Charles Igwe, three children, an aged mother. So sad! May her soul rest in peace...amen

Born Amaka Isaac-Ene, the deceased was an accomplished writer, producer, director, entrepreneur and teacher.

She is the founder of BoBTV Expo, founder and CEO of Top Radio 90.9FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and the newly-launched Q Entertainment Networks.

A visionary and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV drama and film, she hit national limelight as the writer and producer of award-winning TV soap 'Checkmate' and its off shoot 'Fuji House of Commotion'.

Her Nollywood projects include RattleSnake and Violated - two critically-acclaimed movies that set apart Amaka Igwe Studios in the much-criticised Nollywood industry.

Amaka Igwe studied Education/Religion at the University of Ife (Now Obafemi Awolowo University). She had a Master's Degree from the University of Ibadan. She had her early education at All Saints School (Now Trans Ekulu Primary School), Girls High School Awkunanaw, Enugu and Idia College, Benin.

She worked as a lecturer at the Anambra State University of Technology and briefly in oil and Gas, before settling for the motion picture industry.

Sir Alex Ferguson To Help Select David Moyes's Replacement

Sir Alex Ferguson will play a key role choosing David Moyes's replacement as Manchester United manager.

Moyes, who was hand-picked by Ferguson as his successor last year, was sacked on Tuesday after 10 months in charge.

Ferguson will be part of a selection panel consisting of every Manchester United board member.

During his 26-year reign at Old Trafford, Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 league titles and the Champions League in 1999 and 2008.

Under Moyes, United lost six league games at home, were beaten in the FA Cup by Swansea at Old Trafford and went out of the Capital One Cup at the semi-final stage.

They are seventh in the table with four games remaining and are guaranteed to record their lowest points tally in the Premier League.

United will not be playing Champions League football next season for the first time since 1995 and are in danger of missing out on European competition altogether for the first time since 1990.

Things came to a head on Sunday following United's 2-0 defeat at Everton - Moyes's old club.

The board met to discuss the decision to sack Moyes, with Ferguson and Manchester United legend and fellow director Bobby Charlton believed to have been part of those discussions.

Moyes was summoned by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at Carrington on Tuesday morning, when his contract was terminated.

Ryan Giggs, formerly player-coach, will take care of the first team until a permanent appointment can be made, but the 40-year-old United veteran, who has played 962 times for Manchester United, is not thought to be in the running for the job.

Paul Scholes, 39, who retired in May 2013 after chalking up 497 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, returned to the club to assist Giggs at the Carrington training complex on Wednesday, according to a tweet from the club.

United are looking to appoint an experienced manager who has a history of signing top-class players and managing them.

With Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola appearing to be out of reach, Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti are believed to be the leading contenders to take the reins at United.

Whoever takes over from Moyes could have about £100m to invest in rebuilding the squad.

Former Reds Back Giggs

Bryan Robson has given his support to Ryan Giggs as he takes on an interim managerial role at Manchester United.

Following the departure of David Moyes on Tuesday morning, Giggs will assume responsibility for the first team until a permanent appointment is made.

Ex-United skipper Robson told Sky Sports: "I know Ryan has got the job until the end of the season and I definitely think he’s going to be a manager, though whether he gets it full-time at a club like Manchester United is a big ask."

Giggs’ former United and Wales team-mate Clayton Blackmore believes the 40-year-old can lift the Reds for Saturday's game against Norwich.

He told MUTV: "Ryan's not had any time to work with the players and get them to play the way he wants them to play, but he will hopefully have them working hard and I think he’ll get a lift from them. It could be a tough day for Norwich.

"Ryan has everything you need to be a manager, including more coaching badges than me, and I’ve been coaching for 15 years."

Two other ex-Reds, David May and Danny Higginbotham, also gave their reactions to Giggs' appointment on the club's official TV channel.

"It’s a wise move," May said. "Ryan knows how this club works, he knows the passion of the fans and I’m sure he will give the dressing room something that is needed."

Higginbotham added: "Ryan is United through and through and he knows what this place is all about. We’re no longer in the cup competitions so, for the final four games, I don’t think it’s a bad choice at all."

Manchester United Sacks Moyes

Ok I guess I need to blog this, though I'm doing it just for the record. As a United fan, I felt so lazy writing about David Moyes who got sacked 24 hrs ago. The Scot who was handpicked by Fergie himself performed woefully in his 10 month reign as Manchester United manager, winning just 27 out of 51 matches played.

During his time at Old Trafford, Man United also failed to pick up a UEFA Champions league slot for the first time since 1995.

However, Louis van Gaal remains the number one target to replace him as United manager, while Player-Coach Ryan Giggs takes over in the interim.

The Era Of P-Square Comes To An End

The news of P-Square's imminent break-up last week wasn't just a rumor but one we've now come to live with, but their publicist Bayo Adetu refuted the story, saying it was "baseless and untrue" (read it here).

Jude Engees who happens to be their elder brother and manager tweeted:

After over 10yrs of hard work, it's over. Am done.

We also learnt that the brothers had a fight on Wednesday and that Peter Okoye and his wife had moved out of the Squareville mansion and now resides in Lekki.

An industry source had this to say:

“Yes they fought this week. Peter even left a mark on Paul’s left eye. But the fight wasn’t during rehearsal, which rehearsal? Peter has refused to do anything P-Square for weeks now. Forget that he was at his brother’s wedding, things are not good between them right now. They were even invited to perform at president Jonathan’s wedding but they didn’t go.

Peter wants out. He said Paul and Jude are sidelining him. That if they push out 200 songs, 199 would be songs Paul did. That people are now calling him a dancer in P-Square. Peter is really angry. He’s even the cool and friendly one between the brothers but he is not himself right now. And then he accused his brother Jude of disrespecting his wife.

Peter and Jude haven’t spoken in weeks. Peter said Jude has been disrespecting Lola for years and he was done tolerating the BS. In fact Peter said that not only is Lola older than Jude, but that she’s also pregnant and Jude was upsetting a pregnant woman. If you notice Jude didn’t attend their wedding last year despite the fact that he was in Nigeria. Jude asked Peter why he didn’t marry Lola when their mother was alive. Jude said it’s his wife that is pushing him and they will need to pray for him. In fact nobody in the Okoye family likes Lola and they didn’t support the marriage. The brothers are really angry at each other. The police is even involved. This week, either the commissioner of police or someone from his office visited their house.

The worst part is that they have invited lawyer to come and share property o. They want to share everything. The lawyer was at their house I think on Thursday. Peter said no more P-Square joint ventures. You know they own everything together, including a house in Omole, Parkview and Atlanta. Except something is done fast P-Square is about to be finished. But I know that people have been intervening and begging them to reconsider, that they are the biggest musical duo in Africa. Nobody will benefit if they split. The power to make money is in their togetherness.

It is Jude people are begging to keep the brothers together, but after what he tweeted yesterday, it may truly be over for P-Square. Jude has really tried for his brothers, for him to give up may mean it’s over for them. He practically put his entire life on hold for his brothers. Even sold his first car to shoot their first video but all that is about go come to an end like he tweeted. The only thing that can save the situation is if by a miracle Jude and Lola settle their differences but I don’t see that happening.

Back in 2007, Sean “Diddy” Combs teamed with Jay Z and 50 Cent to create a song titled “I Get Money: Forbes 1-2-3 Billion Dollar Remix.” Less than a decade later, rappers are closing in on ten-figure fortunes, and he’s the nearest of the bunch.

Diddy leads the pack with an estimated fortune of $700 million, an increase of $120 million over his net worth last year. The change comes largely from the addition of Revolt TV—the new, music-focused, multi-platform channel of which he’s the majority owner—to his already-hefty portfolio.

"Right now my focus is Revolt and making it the number one, most-trusted, most credible worldwide brand for music,” he told FORBES in a recent interview. “And  to get Revolt to be the quintessential definition of real time. I think that’s the future."

Diddy has plenty of competition in the race to $1 billion. His top challengers are Dr. Dre, who ranks second with $550 million, and Jay Z, in third place with an estimated $520 million. The former leapfrogged the latter on this year’s Forbes Five thanks to a large stake in Beats By Dr. Dre, which he cofounded with Interscope chief Jimmy Iovine in 2008.

The company controls an astounding two-thirds of the premium headphone market, with annual sales reportedly in excess of $1 billion and growing. Private equity firm Carlyle invested $500 million for a minority stake last year, pushing Beats’ value past $1 billion and likely closer to $2 billion.

“Beats has a unique brand—it speaks to a nice young demographic, which is really interesting to marketers,” says Peter Csathy, former president of Musicmatch, an early digital music purveyor acquired by Yahoo  in 2004 for $160 million. “When I think about Beats, I think about it as a lifestyle, I think of it as a media company, not just a hardware and music-focused company.”

Jay Z’s fortune continues to grow at a healthy clip, too. He’s made multiple nine-figure deals in the past, including his $204 million Rocawear sale in 2007 and his $150 million pact with Live Nation in 2008. But much of his recent growth comes from Roc Nation, his record label and management firm that recently added a sports agency. The outfit gets a single-digit cut of pacts like Robinson Cano’s $240 million monster agreement.

Next  up: Bryan “Birdman” Williams, whose net worth would be over $300 million if he didn’t share his fortune with brother Ronald “Slim” Williams. The duo cofounded Cash Money Records two decades ago; Cash Money continues to grow with a roster that includes Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. Birdman has also diversified with Cash Money Content, GT Vodka and the YMCMB clothing line.

Rounding out the list is 50 Cent, who owes most of his fortune to his $100 million haul from the sale of Vitaminwater in 2007. Now he’s trying to repeat the feat with companies like SMS  Audio and SK Energy beverages. In the meantime, he’ll reboot his music career by taking his G-Unit Records independent and releasing new album Animal Ambition in June.
