NEWS: Madiba Heads To His Final Resting Place

The State funeral service of former President Nelson Mandela has ended in the specially erected marquee on his family home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape. Madiba coffin will now be taken to his final resting place.

The world is not expected to witness former president Nelson Mandela's coffin being lowered into his grave at his rural home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape.

The Defence Force will sound the Last Post and the Reveille and then wuthdraw.

Mandela's actual burial will be a private affair. Only up to 450 mourners, including members of the Mandela house, Madiba clan, Thembu kingdom, close friends and select dignitaries will be allowed at his grave site, where his parents and children have been reburied.

It is unclear who will conduct the Thembu burial ceremony, including certain rituals.

In his sermon, Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa says we should take up a life of selflessness as Madiba did in his speech at the official state funeral.

"We will always cherish the life you shared with this nation," he adds.

"Thank you for the trust you have placed in me. The responsibility was tremendous. It was an honour to serve you Tata. I bid you farewell," says Mandela family friend, Bantu Holomisa.

He says that the Madiba song may have ended but its melody lingers on and we must make sure it never ends.

He has thanked Mandela's medical team for looking after him and for all the support that has been bestowed upon the family.

He has also thanked the African National Congress (ANC) for its role in the country and says their efforts will never be forgotten.

British actor Idris Elba is among the dignitaries attending the funeral of the former president, Nelson Mandela, in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday.

Elba played the character of Mandela in the movie, Long Walk to Freedom, recently released about his life.

Funeral programme director, African National Congress deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, said Elba had been nominated for an award for his portrayal of Mandela in the movie.

Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey and US actor Forest Whitaker are also among the dignitaries.
