Manchester City ran out comfortable winners against their local rivals as they overcame Manchester United 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium, while Tottenham Hotspur left it late to overcome Cardiff City.
Manchester United lined up without striker Robin van Persie, who injured his thigh in training on Saturday, and Manuel Pellegrini’s side took full advantage with a commanding display against their local rivals.
Sergio Aguero gave City the lead with a clever volley on 16 minutes, before Yaya Toure doubled the hosts’ lead of the stroke of half-time. Aguero produced another volley early in the second half and Samir Nasri threatened a rout when he made it 4-0 in the 50th minute.
There were no further goals for the hosts but bragging rights assuredly belong to the blue half of Manchester even if Wayne Rooney provided United fans with a consolatory free-kick late in the game, for a record-breaking 11th Manchester derby goal.
